Grisham Slam & Volpe HR Highlight Another Bomber Win. NY 10 ChiSox 2

Anthony Volpe with a 2-run HR in the 7th to make it a 10-1 game.

The Bronx Bombers bombed again.

They scored 10 or more runs for the 3rd straight game, 4th time in their last 5 games, and 22nd time this season — which leads MLB (Boston is 2nd with 20).

This time Trent Grisham hit a Grand Slam with 2 outs in the 4th to give NY a 5-0 lead, and Anthony Volpe hit a 2-run HR in the 7th to make it 10-1, bookending a machine-gun rally in the 6th that produced 3 runs, with RBI hits by Volpe, Austin Wells, and Ben Rice.

All backed a solid 6-inning start of Carlos Rodon for a 10-2 win over the White Sox on a beautiful, summer Friday night on the south side of Chicago.

Anthony Volpe continued hot for the 2nd straight game — going 2 for 4 with the HR and 3 RBI’s to raise his average to .209. Austin Wells, his Chicken Parm co-conspirator who has also been having trouble with his batting average this year — went 2 for 3 to raise his average to .210.

“I think we got out-hit 12-7, but it was just heavy at bats from jump,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards. “We didn’t break through in that 1st inning — I mean we got the 1 run — but just wear him down, wear him down — get another opportunity and Grish hits the big 4 ball there ahead in the count. Just a ton of heavy at bats.”

NY improves to 75-60, and pulls within 3 of Toronto while leapfrogging Boston into 2nd place. The Yanks now lead Boston by .5 in the standings. The White Sox fall to 48-87.

1. Yanks Put Yoendrys on the Ropes Early; He Escapes

The Yanks were up against old friend Yoendrys Gomez, who was 1-1 2.70 for NY in 10 innings at the start of this season before being waived on April 25th and picked up by the Dodgers. Yoendrys pitched 4.1 innings for the Dodgers, allowing 7 runs for a 14.54 ERA before being waived and picked up by the White Sox on May 10.

The 25-year-old, 6’3 righthander was a one-time high prospect for NY who was derailed by shoulder issues, including a torn UCL that required surgery in 2021 when he was 21 years old. Yoendrys has pitched well for the ChiSox, coming in with a 3-1 4.73 record. This was his 4th start with them.

NY waived Yoendrys due to roster math — he was out of minor league options, meaning the Yanks had to add him to their 40-man roster, which would reduce roster flexibility (they could lose another player later on). Yoendrys had been showing  potential with his “pure stuff” but lacked consistent control.

And Yoendrys walked the first 3 batters of the game — Grisham, Aaron Judge, and Cody Bellinger — to load the bases with nobody out.

But Yoendrys got Ben Rice to ground into a double play — scoring a run.

Yoendrys then got Giancarlo Stanton on a lineout to shortstop and escape the jam with just 1 run allowed. NY 1 ChiSox 0.

2. Grisham 2-out Slam Gets Yoendrys in 4th

Yoendrys then struck out the side in the 2nd, using his assortment of 94-MPH sinker, 95-MPH four-seam fastball, 82-MPH curveball, and 82-MPH sweeper.

The Yanks threatened in the 3rd — a leadoff single by Austin Wells and 1-out walk by Aaron Judge. But Yoendrys got a fly out and foul out for a shutout inning.

The Yanks kept pushing Yoendrys in the 4th — and this time broke through big time. Giancarlo Stanton reached on catcher’s interference to lead off the inning, Jazz Chisholm Jr. walked — but Yoendrys struck out Ryan McMahon and got Volpe to fly out.

With 2 outs, Yoendrys walked Austin Wells on 5 pitches — and Trent Grisham ripped a 2-out, 2-0 fastball for a 387-foot Grand Slam to right center.

3. Yankee Machine-Gun Rally in 6th Makes It 8-1

Lefty Brandon Eisert relieved Yoendrys for the 5th and pitched a 1-2-3 shutout inning, but the White Sox brought out 23-year-old, 6’3 righty Grant Taylor for the 6th and the Yankees pounced.

Jazz Chisholm Jr. worked another walk, leading off — then stole 2nd, and Ryan McMahon walked to put runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out.

Anthony Volpe then singled to center for a 6-1 Yankee lead.

Next batter Austin Wells ripped a line drive to 1st for a single, scoring a run to make it 7-1 NY.

25-year-old, 6’5 righty Mike Vasil came in to pitch and struck out Grisham, walked Aaron Judge, and got Cody Bellinger to foul out to 3rd for the 2nd out.

But with 2 outs, bases loaded, Ben Rice got a clutch single to left for an 8-1 NY lead.

4. Rodon a Solid 6-Inning Outing for the Win

Meanwhile Carlos Rodon — back in his original home stadium in Chicago — pitched a solid start, getting lots of groundouts and fly outs, and scattering 7 singles and 2 walks over 6 innings.

Rodon:

  • Worked around a leadoff walk in the 1st,
  • Pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 2nd,
  • Worked around 2 singles in the 3rd — with the first runner (Brooks Baldwin) called out by being hit by the batted ball of Chase Meidroth.
  • Issued a 1-out walk in the 4th but got a double play to end the inning.
  • Up 5-0, allowed a run in the bottom of the 5th on a leadoff single by Andrew Benintendi, 1-out single by centerfielder Michael Taylor, and 2-out infield single by 2nd baseman and leadoff batter Chase Meidroth — when Ryan McMahon fielded a chopper down 3rd but couldn’t quite tag out the runner.

  • Up 8-1, pitched around 2 singles in the 6th — getting a pop out and strikeout to end the inning and his outing.

“Ro was good man. Six strong,” said Boone afterwards. “Continues to be that guy we can count on. Wasn’t overpowering by any means but was pretty efficient overall, and you saw everything play a role for him.”

Rodon’s line: 6 IP, 7 hits, 1 run, 5 K’s, 2 walks in 97 pitches — he wins to go 15-7 3.18.

5. Volpe HR in 7th Makes It 10-1

And then Anthony Volpe made it 10-1 in the top of the 7th, with a 1-out HR to right center off Vasil with Ryan McMahon aboard. NY 10 ChiSox 1.

6. Fernando, Hill, & Doval Close It

Fernando Cruz pitched a shutout 7th — allowing a leadoff single but then getting consecutive fly outs and a strikeout.

Tim Hill allowed a run in the 8th — off a leadoff double by catcher Edgar Quero, single by shortstop Colson Montgomery, and 1-out RBI single by Andrew Benintendi. But Hill got a strikeout and ground out to keep the score right there at 10-2 NY.

And then Camilo Doval pitched a shutout 9th — allowing an infield single to Baldwin, but getting foul out and fly out, walking Quero — but getting Montgomery to fly to left for the old ballgame.
