Max Fried fried the Orioles for 7 innings of 3-hit, shutout baseball, and the Yankee offense put 4 runs on the board in the 7th to turn a 3-0 game into a 7-0 blowout on a beautiful, 70-degree Thursday night in Baltimore.
The Yanks put 2 on the board in the 1st inning, and another in the 5th to take a 3-0 lead while Fried was mowing down the Orioles — striking out 13. But still the Orioles were one swing away in the 6th when they got a 1-out single followed by a 2-out single against Fried. But Fried struck out Tyler O’Neill for the final out and then the Yanks put the game out of reach in the top of the 7th, highlighted by a 2-run double by Giancarlo Stanton.
Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells were at the heart of the Yankee scoring for the 2nd night in a row — Volpe hitting a double to lead off the 5th, driven in by an Austin Wells single for a 3-0 NY lead, and Wells drawing a key walk at the start of the rally in the 7th. Wells had 2 hits on the night.
Paul Blackburn pitched no-hit, shutout ball for the last 2 innings.
“His stuff was good; probably best changeup he’s had all year,” said manager Aaron Boone about Fried. “It was really good from the side — the depth on it; swing and miss with it; using it; featured it. But stuff was really good again — just really in control of the game. Took a lead and obviously ran with it.”
“Fun,” added Boone when asked what it was like to watch Fried pitch. “I love watching him pitch. He’s such a good athlete. Obviously the way he fields his position, controls the running game and things like that — you see his athleticism. But you see his athleticism on the mound too — just how fluid he is, how he can add and subtract, how he’s got upper 9o’s in the tank always; the different ways he can get you out.”
NY improves to 86-67 and pulls to within 3 of Toronto, while also pulling 2 ahead of Boston — which both lost. Baltimore falls to 72-81.
1. Yanks Jump On Top 2-0 In 1st
The Orioles started 25-year-old, 6’3 lefty Cade Popvich, and NY jumped on him right away in the top of the 1st: Paul Goldschmidt led the game off with a single to left, and after Aaron Judge struck out, Cody Bellinger worked walk.
Giancarlo Stanton flied out — but Amed Rosario — starting the game as the 2nd baseman against the lefty Popvich — ripped a double to left for a 2-0 Yankee lead.

2. Volpe & Wells Make It 3-0 in 5th
Popvich settled down — pitching shutout ball in the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th — in fact striking out the side 1-2-3 in the 4th.
But Anthony Volpe led off the 5th with a double, and Austin Wells singled him home for a 3-0 Yankee lead.

3. Fried Fantastic
Meanwhile Fried was fantastic — in total command, striking out 13 while pitching to a low pitch count.

Still — even while Dave Sims and Suzyn Waldman were raving about Fried’s outing on the radio — the game was only 3-0 when Fried allowed a 1-out single to Ryan Mountcastle and a 2-out single to Gunnar Henderson in the bottom of the 6th — the Orioles were one swing away from tying the game.
But Fried struck out Tyler O’Neill and then the Yanks made it 7-0 in the top of the 7th to turn the game into a rout.

4. Yanks Score 4 in 7th to Make It 7-0
Popvich left after 5, and Yennier Cano pitched a shutout 6th.
But Chayce McDermott pitched the top of the 7th for the Orioles — and the Yanks pounced.
Jose Caballero led off with a walk, Austin Wells walked behind him, and Paul Goldschmidt singled in Caballero for a 4-0 Yankee lead.

Aaron Judge — who after striking out in the 1st was pitched carefully from then on, walking the next 2 times up — ripped a 1st-pitch cutter on a line drive to left for a sac fly and 5-0 Yankee lead.

And then Giancarlo Stanton put the game away with a 2-RBI double to left for a 7-0 game.

5. Blackburn Finishes
Paul Blackburn pitched the final 2 innings for NY — throwing a 1-2-3 inning in the 8th and allowing a 2-out walk in the 9th before getting a groundout-comebacker for the old ballgame.
