Cam Schlittler threw 6 shutout innings and the Yankee offense exploded for 10 runs with 3 HR’s (by Ben Rice, Jazz Chisholm Jr., and Jasson Dominguez) as NY crushed Washington 10-5 on a beautiful, summer Monday night in the Bronx.
The Yankees led 10-0 with 2 outs and nobody on in the 9th, when Washington scored all 5 of their runs — 2 singles, 2 walks, and a Grand Slam by Jacob Young. The singles and walks came off Yerry De los Santos — who was ‘this close’ to pitching 3 shutout innings of relief. The Slam came off Mark Leiter Jr., hurried in from the pen.
It was Schlittler’s second straight shutout performance — having pitched a Perfect Game into the 7th inning in his previous start.
“Big fastball; breaking ball presence; throwing strikes; he’s good,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards about Cam. “He’s good. Some of the lefties at the top of the lineup put some good at bats on him; squared some balls up 2nd and 3rd time through, but just another really strong performance.”
NY improves to 71-60, and remain 5 behind Toronto and .5 behind Boston. Washington falls to 53-78.
1. Schlittler Fantastic
The story of the game for the Yanks was Cam Schlittler — who threw down yet another fantastic start.
The Yankee fuselage of runs didn’t come until the bottom of the 5th — so through the top of the 5th, Cam held a 2-0 lead — his shutout was keeping the Yanks on top.
Yet again Cam was using his 98-101 MPH heater (he hit 101 in this game), 90-MPH cutter, and wicked 82-MPH curveball to subdue the opposition. His line: 6 IP, 4 hits, 8 K’s, 3 walks in 96 pitches. He wins to go 2-2 2.76.

Cam scattered the hits and walks. He got out of a minor jam in the 4th, when he allowed 2 singles sandwiching a strikeout to put runners on 1st and 3rd with 1 out. But he got shortstop CJ Adams to pop out and then got help from catcher Ben Rice who threw out Josh Bell trying to steal to end the inning, stranding the runner on 3rd.

The only other time Washington mounted any kind of rally against Cam was in the 6th, down 7-0, when they got a leadoff single and walk — but Cam struck out Luis Garcia Jr. and got Josh Bell to hit into a double play.

2. Rice HR Makes It 2-0 in 3rd
Meanwhile the Yankees faced Ben Lord, a 25-year-old 6’3 righthander who came in with a 4-6 3.46 record.
The Yanks immediately got a run off Lord in the bottom of the 1st on consecutive 1-out walks by Ben Rice and Aaron Judge, who both moved up to 2nd and 3rd on a passed ball by catcher Adams. Cody Bellinger hit a sac fly to center to make it 1-0 Yanks.
Ben Rice made it 2-0 Yanks in the bottom of the 3rd with a monster blast — 435 feet to right center.

3. Jazz HR Highlights 5-Run 5th
It was a close 2-0 game until the bottom of the 5th, when NY knocked out Lord.
Jose Caballero — playing shortstop the last few days as the slumping Anthony Volpe gets a rest — led off with a single. Trent Grisham followed with a single, and after Ben Rice flied out, Aaron Judge ripped a ground-rule double to opposite field right for a 3-0 Yankee lead.

And then Jazz Chisholm Jr. — fresh off the 2-HR game of the night before — upper cut a 390-foot, 2-run HR to right. NY 7 Washington 0.

4. The Martian 3-Run HR Makes It 10-0
That knocked out Lord, and 6’8 righty Jackson Rutledge came in for the Nationals. He pitched a shutout 6th and was relieved by 6’4 righty Cole Henry for the 7th.
Henry got the first 2 outs of the inning but Jazz Chisholm walked, Paul Goldschmidt singled, and Jasson Dominguez hit a HIGH DRIVE 357 feet to right for a 3-run HR — his 10th HR of the year — for a 10-0 Yankee lead.

5. De los Santos “This Close” to 3 Shutout IP
Yerry De los Santos relieved Cam Schlittler after 6 innings — and pitched a 1-2-3 inning in the 7th, striking out 2, and a shutout 8th, allowing just a 2-out single.
De los Santos allowed a leadoff single in the top of the 9th, but got a double play and the Yanks were 1 out away from the win, up 10-0 with nobody on base.
And then…
Single, single, walk, and walk (to DH Robert Hassell III) for a 10-1 game.
Mark Leiter Jr. relieved De los Santos and coughed up a Grand Slam to centerfielder Jacob Young for a 10-5 game, before striking out leftfielder James Wood for the old ballgame.
