Big G Powers Yanks with HR & 5 RBI’s. NY 5 Washington 1

Big G 2-run MISSILE in 6th puts NY up 5-1.

Giancarlo Stanton drove in 3 runs with a bases-loaded double in the 3rd inning, and added a 2-run HR in the 5th to support 5 strong innings by Luis Gil and 4 shutout innings by the Yankee bullpen in a 5-1 win over the Nationals on a beautiful, 75-degreee Tuesday night in the Bronx.

Fernando Cruz made his first appearance since June, recuperating from a left oblique strain, and was rusty in the 6th, loading the bases on a single, walk, and hit-by-pitch — but struck out 2 and was saved by Tim Hill who got the final out of the inning to preserve a 3-1 lead at the time. Hill, Camilo Doval, and David Bednar took it from there with a shutout inning each.

A nice, neat win.

Gil allowed at least one baserunner in each inning, but was good in pitching out of threats. And it was all powered by Big G.

“Even when he goes on good runs — obviously he hits the ball so hard, and he’ll hit HR’s and he’s gotten so many big hits over the years,” said manager Aaron Boone afterwards about Stanton and how hot he’s been in August. “But the consistency of the bat is what’s been so impressive. Tonight all of them. The first at bat he puts together a great at bat against (MacKenzie) Gore who I think executes a pitch with 2 strikes with the breaking ball, and he almost clipped him there. And then he just — grind, grind, grind — gets to a good count and boom — bases clearing double. And then obviously the last one. It’s just great to see; he’s in a great mental frame of mind, focused, and obviously delivering.”

NY improves to 72-60, pulling to within 4.5 of Toronto, and remaining .5 behind Boston. Washington falls to 53-79.

1. Gil Rope-a-Dopes a Fine Win

Luis Gil was making his 5th start since missing most of the season recuperating from a high-grade right lat strain suffered in Spring training. He is still rusty but continues to show great stuff, and pitch out of jams he gets into.

  • Gil pitched around a 1-out single by CJ Abrams in the 1st — getting help from Austin Wells behind the plate who picked off Abrams off 1st. Wells continues to play defense like Thurman Munson behind the plate.

  • Gil allowed a 1-out single in the 2nd, but got consecutive pop outs to end the inning.
  • Gil allowed a leadoff double in the 3rd, then issued a 1-out walk, and allowed an RBI single by Abrams — giving Washington a 1-0 lead. Gil got a fly out for the 2nd out, but then balked to put runners on 2nd and 3rd — before getting another fly out to end the jam.
  • In the 4th, Gil got strikeout, walk, strikeout, walk, strikeout.

  • And in the 5th Gil allowed a leadoff double to James Wood in a 3-1 game, but got flyout and strikeout, and then was saved by Cody Bellinger in left — who gunned down Wood at the plate after Josh Bell ripped a 2-out single to left.

Luis Gil’s line: 5 IP, 5 hits, 5 K’s, 4 walks. Not perfect but good when he needed to be and he goes to 2-1 3.75.

2. Giancarlo 3-Run Double Makes It 3-1 in 3rd

Meanwhile Washington started MacKenzie Gore, and he shut the Yanks out for the first 2 innings, and struck out the first 2 Yankees of the 3rd (Anthony Volpe and Austin Wells). But with 2 outs, Paul Goldschmidt doubled to center, Aaron Judge walked, and Cody Bellinger walked — loading the bases.

Giancarlo Stanton then unloaded them by smashing a 2-out, 3-RBI double to left for a 3-1 Yankee lead.

3. Fernando & Hill Escape Trouble in 6th

Fernando Cruz — who was filthy for the Yanks up thru June when he went out with the left oblique strain — was finally back. The 35-year-old righty with the awesome splitter pitched the 6th and was clearly rusty.

He allowed a leadoff single to CJ Adams and then hit Dylan Crews with a pitch to put runners on 1st and 2nd with nobody out in a 3-1 game.

But Cruz then struck out Brady House swinging on 3 nasty splitters.

Robert Hassell III reached on a bunt single to load the bases with 1 out.

Cruz went 2-0 on Young — but came back with 3 straight strikes — striking Jacob Young out swinging on a nasty splitter.

In came Tim Hill the lefty to face lefty Wood. Hill went 3-2 on Wood, before getting to ground out to end the threat — leaving the bases loaded and preserve the Yankee 3-1 lead. PHEW.

4. Big G 2-Run HR in 6th Makes It 5-1

And then in the bottom of the inning, Washington relieved Gore with Orlando Ribalta, and the Yanks pounced. Cody Bellinger led off with an infield single to 3rd, and next batter Giancarlo Stanton hit a MISSILE to left for a 5-1 Yankee lead.

5. Hill a Shutout 7th

Tim Hill pitched the 7th — allowing a leadoff single to guess who CJ Abrams — but then getting a strikeout and double play.

6. Caballero with the Steal of the Year

Jose Caballero — who replaced Giancarlo Stanton for defense in right field for the 7th — walked with 2 outs in the bottom of the 7th against former Yankee C Beeter. Caballero then stole 2nd — getting a 75-foot jump on the catcher — which became a viral highlight of the game.

Trent Grisham and Ryan McMahon walked behind Caballero — loading the bases with 2 outs — before Jazz Chisholm Jr. popped out to end the inning.

7. Doval a Shutout 8th

Camilo Doval pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 8th, striking out 2 and hitting 101 on the radar gun.

8. Bednar a Shutout 9th

And David Bednar pitched a 1-2-3 shutout 9th, striking out the first 2 batters swinging, then getting a groundout for the old ballgame.
