Yanks Lose 5th of 6th. Red Sox 5 NY 4 in 11 innings

Jose Trevino waves Matt Carpenter to follow him home and win the game on the wild throw by the pitcher into left field in the bottom of the 9th. Carpenter held up at 3rd. That's how close Yanks came to winning.

It’s been a bad week for the Yankees. Another night, another frustrating loss in a game they could’ve should’ve won — this time they blew a bases loaded, nobody out situation in the 9th when they could not plate the game winning run, and a bases loaded, 1-situation in the 10th — again not plating the game-winning run.

Instead they lost in 11 innings. On a hot summer Friday night in the Bronx.

In the last week, the Yanks:

  1. Lost 6-5 to Boston when the final double play ball to win the game slipped thru Josh Donaldson‘s fingers,
  2. Blew a 6-3 lead in losing to the Red Sox 11-6 when the bullpen blew it up,
  3. Blew a 3-0 lead in the 9th, and 7 innings of shutout ball by Gerrit Cole, when Clay Holmes allowed 4 runs in the 9th,
  4. Won 7-6 in extra innings (although sweated out the Luis Severino injury afterwards),
  5. Had the bullpen waste a terrific start by Nestor Cortes Jr in losing 7-6 in 10 innings,
  6. And then this 5-4 11-inning loss to the Red Sox.

The Yanks are now 62-28, 12 games ahead of Tampa and 14.5 ahead of Boston and Toronto.

1. Monty with a Quality Start

The game didn’t start out well for Jordan Montgomery. Rob Refsnyder led off with a walk, and Rafael Devers hit a 413-foot homer to center for a 2-0 Boston lead just like that.

JD Martinez, the very next batter, hit a grounds rule double to left and Xander Bogaerts singled and it was 1st and 3rd nobody out.

But Monty got tough — fly out, fly out, strikeout and he got out of the inning with no further damage.

Monty then pitched 3-hit ball thru the 6th — allowing only a homer to Christian Vazquez in the 4th, which tied the game 3-3 at the time.

“His secondary was solid,” said manager Aaron Boone about Montgomery afterwards. “A real gutsy effort. To be able to give us 6 innings on a night after that first inning was pretty impressive. But its because he’s throwing the ball really well too.”

Isiah Kiner-Falefa helped Montgomery out with a brilliant play to end the 6th, on a sharp grounder that ricocheted off of Monty’s glove.

Montgomery left with the game tied 3-3. His line: 6 innings, 6 hits, 3 runs, 4 Ks, in 93 pitches — a quality start.

2. Giancarlo’s Bomb Puts Yanks Ahead

Down 2-0, DJ LeMahieu got a 1-out single in the 3rd off Boston starter Nathan Eovaldi, Anthony Rizzo walked and Giancarlo Stanton hit a 400-foot BOMB to opposite field right for a 3-2 Yankee lead.

3. Chapman Coughs up Homer

With Vazquez having tied the game 3-3 with his homer in the 4th, Monty left after 6 innings and manager Aaron Boone brought in Aroldis Chapman into the high-leverage situation — 3-3 tie against the Red Sox.

Chapman went 2-2 on Bobby Dalbec the first batter he faced. But Dalbec Golfed a 2-2 pitch into the left field stands for a 4-3 Boston lead. Chapman then got pop out, strike out, strike out — so there was a measure of hope there.

3. Yanks Tie It in Bottom of 9th

But the Yanks were down 4-3 and it stayed that way into the bottom of the 9th, when Gleyber Torres led off with an infield single off Tanner Houck, and Matt Carpenter was hit by a pitch.

Isiah Kiner-Falefa bunted the ball back to the pitcher Houck — who threw to 3rd but thew it away down the left field line. Torres scored and was waving Carpenter to follow behind him to win the game but Carpenter stayed at 3rd.

Aaron Hick was then walked to load the bases — but Jose Trevino hit into a double play — home to 1st. And that killed the rally and the scoring opportunity.

4. Yanks Blow Bases-Loaded Opportunity in 10th

In the 10th, Houck intentionally walked Anthony Rizzo with 1 out to set up a double play situation — with the inherited runner on 2nd. But Giancarlo Stanton got an infield hit to load the bases with 1 out.

Houck got his double play when Gleyber Torres hit a grounder to 2nd to end the inning.

5. Red Sox Win It in 11th

Clay Holmes pitched a shutout 10th for the Yanks. Michael King pitched the 11th and got the 1st two outs — the inherited runner moving to 3rd. With 2 outs, King threw one that hit the dirt in front of the plate and escaped Trevino — and the Red Sox runner Xander Bogaerts scored to put Boston up 5-4.

The Yanks could not plate their inherited runner in the 10th — Ryan Brasier got a strikeout and groundout to start the inning. He went 3-2 on Aaron Hicks before throwing ball 4, but the 3rd base ump overruled saying Hicks had swung for strike 3 and the old ballgame.

Etcetera

  • Don’t look now but Aaron Judge continued his mini slump — going 0-4 to lower his average to .274.
  • DJ LeMahieu went 3-5 to raise his average to .272.
  • Matt Carpenter went 2-3 and is now at .352

  1. I was listening to this one on the radio while taking a night drive thru New Jersey.
Tough loss. Thought they had it won in the 9th.
